🔍 What All To Look Out For While Buying Speakers (Other Than Price)?

Not always can a friend’s suggestion be a hundred percent accurate. And not always can you spend your money on someone else’s suggestions. So it is better to consider a few factors before buying speakers for your home DJ studio.

📶 Frequency Range Offered

Frequency Range Offered

The frequency range, also known as frequency response, is measured in Hertz (Hz).

Now you would want to know why this specification is so important, and I’m here to tell you just that!

With the frequency range specified, you can figure out what kinds of low and high sounds the speaker can play and how the volume would be affected.

Look out for the Hertz ratings: Hz rating for low-end and kHz rating for the high-end. Also, ensure that even if the speakers’ frequency range is good, it performs well at the contrasting frequencies.

Now let me brief you about the technicalities. Hz rating and the bass are directly proportional, which means that if the Hz rating number is higher, the speakers’ bass would be deeper.

This Hz rating would give you information about the bass output.

As we studied when we were younger, humans can only hear up to 20 Hz of frequency. Hence, any sound above 20 Hz of frequency (higher frequency means shriller sound) can’t be heard, but it definitely creates an impact as it can still be felt through vibrations.

Important:

Speakers in the frequency range of 50Hz or above usually would not require a subwoofer to enhance the sound quality. Such speakers make the entire house shaky or thumping with their volume, which would surely satisfy your home DJing vibes and requirements.

Next comes the treble rating in kHz, which generally describes the clarity of the sound. The higher the treble rating, the higher is the crispiness and clarity of the audio.

🎧 DJ Speakers v/s Studio Monitors

DJ Speakers vs Studio Monitors

People usually consider both DJ Speakers and studio monitors the same. But there is one key difference between the two that should be considered.

While regular speakers will not improve the sound quality with richer bass and higher authenticity, studio monitors are designed just for that purpose. They give a completely different listening experience in comparison to regular speakers.

Studio monitors are used by musicians and artists and involve an advanced engineering technology that can be very expensive. They usually come as powered studio monitors.

Also Read: The Epic Serato vs Rekordbox

Powered studio monitors have built-in amplifiers that are tailored to one particular speaker. It nullifies the need to buy an additional amplifier to enhance each speaker’s performance.

Studio monitors are also comparatively smaller in size as they are designed for professional purposes. So depending on your needs and the space in your house, you can decide whether you want to buy studio monitors or regular DJ speakers.

👂 Sensitivity

Sensitivity

Measured in decibels (dB), this specification determines the speaker’s loudness. The ideal decibel range for speakers is between 80 and 95.

Like the other specifications I mentioned above, this rating is also directly proportional to the loudness, i.e., the higher the rating, the higher the speakers’ volume range.

While a higher rating might seem incredible, anything higher than 90 dB for a long time, and anything higher than 110 dB for even a short time, can cause severe damage to your ears and cause listening problems.

So before deciding which speakers you should buy, understand the requirements at your home. If it is just for slow and light music at suppers, 80 to 90 dB speakers will suit you perfectly.

However, if you want loud music for a wild party, you should choose speakers with a higher decibel range. Ensure that your loud music isn’t too loud.

🔌 Power Consumption and Handling

Once you are clear with why you would require the speakers, you should be clear about how much power those speakers would require and how much they can handle. I’m talking about the power consumption in Watts (W).

You must know about peak Watt and continuous Watt to get into the technicalities regarding the power consumption of devices. The continuous Watt value helps determine how good a speaker is, whereas the peak Watt value tells the maximum power that the speaker can handle at once.

Please Note:

Now I’m here to warn you not to get tricked by companies as this is how they confuse the buyers. They tend to showcase their speakers as best as they can by only listing the peak value of the speakers and not the continuous value. So do check out the continuous value of the speakers to compare and buy them.

To provide a better understanding, I am adding a table of the power and volume of speakers here:

Power (in Watts)Loudness (in Decibels)
187
290
493
1097
20100
40103
100106
200110

📖 Initial Setup

Initial Setup

It is not just the listening experience that should be fun, but also the installation part. If it is too complicated, you might not feel good about the speakers from the beginning.

  • Firstly, consider the size of the speakers and where exactly you are planning to place them in your house. Check for the speakers’ height if you are particular about placing it somewhere around your head.
  • Also, think about if you would be traveling with these speakers or not. If you plan to travel with the speakers, it would be best to get a small-sized speaker. Getting portable setup speakers would make a significant difference too!

Top 3 Recommendations of Speakers For Home DJ Studio: In Detail

1️⃣ PreSonus Eris E5

Best Choice
Best DJ Speakers For Home

Pros

  • Neutral and clear sound
  • Sufficient number of frequency attenuators
  • Compact size and lightweight
  • Affordable prices

Cons

  • Lacks booming bass
  • The quality of cables included in the package is not up to the mark
  • Extremely sharp mids

The Eris E5 speakers specialize in maintaining the stability of sound with excellence. This model does not forget the main functions of a quality studio monitor and hence provides balanced and neutral sound.

Eris E5 is probably the best option I have come across so far! To know why this is the best option for me, keep reading.

Bass Response

PreSonus Eris E5 (1)
Dev Thakkar/ Swing Vertigo

Since PreSonus Eris E5 are studio monitors, I did not expect booming bass, which happened. The bass was okayish and decent for studio monitors, but the low end could be more pronounced.

You must understand that these are near-field monitors and not expect the loudness and beats of a home-stereo system.

So if that thumping bass feeling is essential to you, I suggest that you buy additional subwoofers. The near-field listening experience is pretty much sufficient, though.

Audio Interface

The Eris E5 speakers specialize in maintaining the stability of sound with excellence. This model does not forget the main functions of a quality studio monitor and hence provides balanced and neutral sound. Although the mids were alright, the peaks seemed to need alignment as they were sharp.

As discussed above, the bass is where PreSonus would disappoint the users as these are studio monitors. If you want pounding bass, it is suggested that you go for home stereo speakers and not studio monitors like Eris E5.

Advantage:

But the best part of these speakers is that the audio is much more detailed and louder than the regular speakers, but not as refined as some other costly models. Hence, they make up excellent devices for studio use!

Build Quality

Build Quality

It is one factor that makes me love these speakers! It is super light in weight, and the size is fine too. Not too big and not too small. It is enough to fit in medium-sized bedrooms or living rooms.

The dimensions of these speakers are 27.9 x 35.6 x 25.4 centimeters, and the size is 5.25 inches. You can fit it anywhere, but it is the most suitable for tabletop mounting. It also has a strong body which again adds up to the pros of this device!

Design

Since it is lighter in weight, many people assume that the body is weak or not durable. But surprisingly, that is not the case.

As I mentioned already, the body is pretty strong, and quality materials have been used for its construction.

The inductors used in Eris E5, i.e., Kevlar low-frequency inductors, have effective heat-resistant properties. Apart from reducing any external influence, it also helps extend the speakers’ life.

Connectivity

This model offers three options for connections: a balanced XLR, a 0.25″ balanced TRS, and an unbalanced RCA input. The package includes an unbalanced RCA cable, but balanced signal audio is the most preferred option by many. So I suggest that you buy a TRS or an XLR cable soon.

2️⃣ M-Audio BX8 D3

Runner Up
Best DJ Speakers For Home

Pros

  • Durable and tough
  • Reproduce authentic audio
  • Acoustic energy loss prevention system
  • Classy and attractive design

Cons

  • Too costly
  • Heats easily
  • No pounding bass

With an Acoustic Space ranging from 37 Hz to 22 kHz, this model is a full-range speaker, suited best for rock and electronic music.

Without beating around the bush, I will quickly tell you about the features of my second-best suggestion for home DJ speakers.

Bass Response

BX8 D3 speakers pair features a rear-facing bass port that provides a balanced bass response. These speakers have separate tweeters and woofers drivers, while the main two drivers are class A/B amplifiers.

It uses 150 watts, out of which 70 watts are used for highs, and 80 watts are for lows.

Audio Interface

M-Audio BX8 D3 Pair (1)
Dev Thakkar/ Swing Vertigo

With an Acoustic Space ranging from 37 Hz to 22 kHz, this model is a full-range speaker, suited best for rock and electronic music.

Build Quality

Weighing 11kg, these speakers use high-quality acoustic-efficiency MDF for the enclosures. It also uses the brand’s fastener-less design to prevent significant acoustic energy loss.

Dimensions:

The speakers weigh 11kg, so they’re heavy enough to be considered durable and compelling speakers. The size is 8 inches, and the dimensions are 34.6 x 40 x 48.5 centimeters.

Design

These speakers give a classy look with Kevlar woofers and detailed mids that provide an incredibly accurate listening experience for a set of monitors.

Obviously not as detailed as the expensive models, but the sound and design quality of BX8 is just mind-blowing!

M-Audio produces reasonably priced products for entry-level to intermediate-level users, but the BX8 D3 feels like something more.

The design might seem very simple, but the material is superb in strength and durability.

Connectivity

Connectivity

There are multiple connection options that can be used for this device. You may use Bluetooth, USB, or TRRS connections to pair the speakers with external devices.

What’s more is that the P4 and P8 channels come into play for recordings, which are two other great connection options!

3️⃣ Alesis Elevate 5 MKII

[Original]

Bronze Medalist
Best DJ Speakers For Home

Pros

  • Clear and loud sound
  • Decent bass response for a studio monitor
  • Connection options that minimize cable interference issues
  • Top-notch built and finish

Cons

  • Poor cable quality
  • Disappointing frequency balance
  • Durability issues

The design includes textures on the outer layer to prevent scratches and fingerprints. It uses piano black color for the entire body to add a bold and classy look, with a gloss finish for the edges.

This company never disappoints, and this product will surely win your heart. Here’s why!

Bass Response

Alesis Elevate 5 MKII- 80W (1)
Dev Thakkar/ Swing Vertigo

There is an additional option for enhanced bass in this model. But even if that option is not used, Alesis Elevate offers decent and neutral bass at cheap rates. Again, these are studio monitors, so there is no pounding bass.

Audio Interface

The sound seems sufficiently authentic with well-defined mids. The elliptical tweeter waveguide assists in providing impressive highs and ensures good dispersion and smooth delivery for higher frequency audios. However, the balance isn’t that great, and the sound cracks at higher volume levels.

Build Quality

  • The monitors weigh 5.6kg, and the custom cabinet has a strong body.
  • You can undoubtedly rely on it for lower-frequency audio management.
  • It also does an excellent job of handling the low frequencies.

Everything, including the components, is fine, but the cables are where this package would fail.

Design

The design includes textures on the outer layer to prevent scratches and fingerprints. It uses piano black color for the entire body to add a bold and classy look, with a gloss finish for the edges.

Connectivity

Here, you can use RCA and balanced 0.25″ TRS connections. It helps in delivering enhanced sound and minimizes cable interference issues.

The speaker wires are fine, and you can connect both the monitors using the TRS connection.

❔ How Many Speakers Should You Have For DJing?

Honestly, there isn’t a direct answer to this question. It would depend on the actual purpose and the user’s audio requirements. You can do well with just one good speaker for small gigs at your house, as wild loudness is not required.

However, if you plan on hosting big events or parties in front of a huge audience, I would suggest that you get multiple (at least two) speakers.

Make sure to mount them with subwoofers to cover all the audio requirements and deliver the sound with the utmost clarity and authenticity.

Are There Specific Space Requirements For DJing?

Are There Specific Space Requirements For DJing

DJing does not mean playing the music all to yourself. It includes you, your DJing equipment, and an audience you would surely want to impress with your music! So it would require a lot of space like an open ground, a huge hall, or just a large room to fit in all the visitors.

But if you exclude the audience part, you still need to ponder how much space your entire system will need. On average, every DJ prefers to have the minimum amount of space to fit in the equipment and reach every tool.

The exact measurements can’t be commented upon, but the commonly used dimensions are:

  • A 2m or 6ft distance from the front to the back.
  • A width of 3m or 10ft.

In that space, the DJ will be able to stand and vibe well while also feeling at ease in setting up the equipment and how required.

Now that you know about the space required for DJing, the best dj speakers for home use, and the number of speakers required for the same, you should have good clarity about home DJing.
